Can we assume donation of pediatric
brain tissue for this work would likely be handled similarly
to current organ donation procedures? Are there any current
legal or other precursors that need to be cleared?
While NIH has defined the guidelines to be used when harvesting
neural stem cells from prenatal tissue sources, there are
no guidelines concerning post-natal tissue sources. Thus,
the donation of tissues from any patient population for the
purpose of neural precursor harvest and possible transplantation
falls under the rubric of existing guidelines. The guidelines
mandate the inclusion of language in the consent forms that
clearly states that the purposes for which the tissue may
be used, including transplantation. At the present time, however,
the tissue is only being harvested for research purposes.
