Due to time constraints, the human embryonic stem cell culture training course will not be taught in strict temporal synchrony with respect to the natural history of stem cells as they progress from thawing through expansion to differentiation.

At 4:00pm each day, the participants and faculty will meet in the lecture room to review the days activities and to solicit points for discussion at the next morning's breakfast. This will be done in oral and written formats. In addition, at the 4:00pm session, a pertinent manuscript will be handed out for discussion, in the form of a journal club, during the next day's lunch.

Free time is built into each day and an extended free time period is provided from lunch Saturday to lunch Sunday. In addition, all dinners will be casual in nature, with no formal scientific content, but they will encourage discussion and foster relationships for possible future collaborations and/or sharing of ideas/techniques/troubleshooting, etc.

The aims of the lectures are divided into the following categories (with responsible faculty given in parentheses). These aims are highlighted in the following table.

A. Culture techniques (Schwartz, Loring, Klassen)
B. Derivation of ES cells and neural stem cells (Loring, Schwartz, Snyder)
C. Maintenance of human ES cells (Loring, Carpenter)
D. Immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy (Schwartz, Klassen, Palmer)
E. Differentiation (Carpenter, Duncan, Schwartz)
F. Characterization (Schwartz, Carpenter, Duncan, Klassen, Palmer)
G. NIH funding and policies (Chiu)
